SCULPTURES, JOHN GIBBON

SCULPTURAL PAINTINGS, ARIYANA

Selenite Landscape, 2007 by Ariyana

John Gibbon and Ariyana have created two new artforms using a beautiful crystal known as Selenite. John has taken the wonderful crystal slabs and sculpted them into delightful luminary scultpures mounted within a metal framework. Whereas, Ariyana has used the smaller pieces to create lovely wall paintings, incorporating the Selenite slivers, along with other mixed media materials. Both expressions, using the Selenite mineral, beautifully grace any setting with light and beauty.

Selenite Sculpture #1, 2007 by John Gibbon

At the bottom of this page is a summary of my research on the web of all the properties and attributes assigned to Selenite. a formidable icon, one with far-ranging implications if one has a metaphysical bent. However, these artistic expressions by John Gibbon and Ariyana go far beyond these purported aspects, to a high level of grace, elegance and breathtaking wonder and beauty.

Satin-Spar Selenite is so unique with its pearly opalescence and fantastic optic qualities due to build-in capillary fibers that a polished face will actually project an image through to the other side. Origins of Selenite

It is thought to be named after the Roman or ancient Greek Goddess of the full moon called 'Selene'. Crystal healing and crystal divination have a long history of being used by shamans, healers, wise women and priestesses for contacting spiritual helpers and guardians. From as far back as Atlantis and Lemurian times, crystals have played an important role in maintaining spiritual connection to source. Kings and queens, monarchs, priests, would have them set in crowns, or in rings. It is a stone that has been used and carved since ancient times, and was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Geology:

Selenite is a crystal form of gypsum, referred to as Gypsum, Satin Spa, or Alabaster which forms easily from saline water and can contain other minerals, and sometimes trapped bubbles. It is a hydrous calcium sulphate CaSO42H20. Usually transparent and occurs in the monclinic crystal system. It is very soft being a 2 on the Moe's scale of hardness. The refractive index is 1.52-1.53 and the specific gravity is 230. The fish-tail and tabby varieties are from Mexico. The Hourglass selenite is from Canada. From the Kalahari Desert, the ancient sands have combined with the Selenite to enhance its beauty and metaphysical energy. It occurs as either natural colorless clear, needle-like or white tabular crystals.
